Pool Instruction: CueTips #41 – Directional Cue Ball Control
October 29, 2010

"The Magician" is known for controlling the cue ball's direction better than anyone (Photo by Daniel Dagotdot at the 2010 US Open)
By NYC Grind Contributor, Mark Finkelstein
I was teaching a pretty advanced player last week a lesson, and we were working on 3 ball patterns. He pocketed the balls well and had good speed control. Unfortunately, he was always a little off in the direction the cue ball was heading. His shot making skills bailed him out, but this area of his game was holding him back.
I’ve put together some drills that will test your abilities to precisely control the direction the cue ball is taking. Try these on the table and see how you do. If you find you are having trouble, great! Now you have something to work on that will improve your game and increase your win percentage. I always like the challenges brought to me by losses, misses and errors! These things open the door for me to learn new things about the game and myself.
For the first drill, you are trying to make the object ball and have the cue ball go two rails to hit the one, then the two and then the 3 balls. (Read on to view the CueTable drill charts.)

House Player Ramilo Tanglao Wins the Tri-State at Master Billiards… This Saturday the Tour Heads to Sandcastle
October 28, 2010

Gail Glazebrook (2nd), Ramilo Tanglao (1st), Alan Chan (3rd)
On Saturday, October 16, The Tri-State Tour headed to Master Billiards in Sunnyside, Queens, NY for their C/D Class 9-ball tour stop, which was a $750-added event.
There was no question in this event who would come out on top in this event, as the top three finishing players all went into the winner’s side final four.
Meeting in the final four match up, one of this season’s top-finishing players, Alan Chan, defeated Master house player Ramilo Tanglao. In the other final four match up, Gail Glazebrook edged ahead of Louie Alicea to win 7-5.
This led to the hot seat match-up between Gail Glazebrook and Alan Chan, where Gail would close the win at double-hill, 6-5. Gail, who is the 2010 BCAPL National Women’s Open Champion, worked her way to the hot seat via wins over Kapriel Delimelkonoglu 6-0, Karen Friere 6-5, Louie Alicea, and finally Alan Chan, to guarantee a spot in the final.
Meanwhile, after Ramilo Tanglao had lost to Alan Chan, he did not let up and went on to defeat Kapriel Delimelkonoglu 6-3, then avenged his prior loss to Chan by winning 6-3 to move on to the final match.

Darren Appleton is Crowned the 2010 US Open Champion
October 26, 2010

Darren Appleton is the 2010 US Open Champion and the first-ever English winner
By NYC Grind Contributor, Geoff Conway – Pool Junkie
From a full field of 256 players the US Open field was whittled down to just four players standing on the final day, Saturday, October 23. The ladies have come and gone. The world champions have come and gone. The semi-pros have come and gone, and we are left with the best four players to fight it out on Saturday to see who is the worthy 35 th US Open Champion come late Saturday evening.
The two players in the winner’s final were Mika Immonen (FIN) and Darren Appleton (GB), and the in the loser’s side final we had Corey Deuel (USA) and Warren Kiamco (PHI). At 1:00 pm, the packed house saw the winner’s match performed in the Accu-Stats Arena, and the losers’ final played directly in front of the large spectator area adjacent to the TV arena.
In the loser’s side match to see who would face of against the loser in the winners side match, Corey Deuel was fighting to win his second green jacket (his first win being in 2001) up against Warren Kiamco, who was third in this event back in 2008.
Ironically, Corey had played almost perfect pool in his previous match against Jason Klatt (CAN), but found himself trailing throughout his match against Kiamco, down 7-2. But, Corey caught a second wind, and made rack after rack until he leveled the match at 8-8. Kiamco made an attempt at a rally and got it to 9-8, before Corey bumped into the lead at 10-9 in his favor.
The new format this year for the final day that players would have to win by two games. Kiamco got the lead at 12-11, but faltered and let Corey get the score to 12-12, Corey then finished off the match winning the next two games to continue on at 14-12. Kiamco had to settle for fourth place, and Corey had to wait for the outcome of the winner’s side final, to see who his next opponent would be.

Corey Deuel Denies Mika Immonen a Chance to at a US Open 9-Ball Hat-Trick
October 24, 2010

Corey Deuel at the US Open 9-Ball Championships

Corey Deuel, winner of a US Open title in 2001, beat 2008 and 2009 US Open winner Mika Immonen 11-3 in the 5:00 pm semifinal match. Corey continued his stellar play and was in control throughout the match. Corey did not give Mika many chances, leaving Mika visibly frustrated as Corey put up bead after bead.
Now that fan favorite Mika Immonen is out of the tournament, there is a buzz about who will win between Corey and Darren Appleton.
Be sure to sweat the action at Accu-Stats.com. AZbilliards.com has been providing live score updates all week, and will be updating fans throughout the final at www.usopen.azbilliards.com.

Mika “The Iceman” Immonen On Target to Make History by Winning his 3rd Consecutive US Open 9-Ball Championships Title
October 23, 2010

Reigning two-time champion Mika Immonen (Photo by Daniel Dagotdot)
Written by NYCgrind.com Contributor Geoff Conway
It was good to see Efren back at the US Open this year, and is definitely still a fan favorite. Shane Van Boening looked to be making a run at the title from the losers bracket, but unfortunately ran into an on-form Corey Deuel on Friday evening, who ended his great run at the title.
Mika Immonen now looks even more of a favorite to make it three wins in a row, as he glides through the winners bracket putting himself in the hot seat against Darren Appleton from England. This hot seat is going to be difficult to pick a winner, and I think that it will come down to who wants the title the most, and certainly who has the most heart.
Darren who has never won a US Open 9-ball title before is hungry to take down his first title, and has shown by his win over Corey Deuel 11-8 in his Friday night match on the TV table at 9:0 pm, that he will be definitely be coming with his A game. Mika on the other hand will be motivated by the target set in his sights, winning a third US Open in consecutive years, a feat that has never been done before. Should Mika win this years event, it would also make the possibility of Mika breaking the record of five wins, held by Earl “The Pearl” Strickland” more than just a dream. With Mika still having many years ahead of him in this sport, it would now become a reality.
In the one-loss side final we have 2001 US Open winner Corey Deuel (USA) matched up against Warren Kiamco (PHI). Warrren came third in this event in 2008, and certainly has the game to get past Corey. However, judging by the free stroking form that Corey showed in his last match with Jason Klatt, he certainly has the potential to dominate. Corey put on a clinic on the TV table at 11:00 pm en route to a 11-1 score.
