Wow, we are at the end of another month.  I’m excited about leaving tomorrow for Atlanta where I’ll be a part of renowned national instructor Tom Simpson’s seminars (www.poolclinics.com), which will be taught at Johnny Archer’s room, Marietta Billiard Club with Tom Simpson and Shawn Putnam.  Sound like a lot of fun.  I’ll be sure to pass on any good ideas I pick up.

This week, for my fourth installment in my series on aiming systems, I want to look at using some of the physics of the game to help us aim just a little bit better.  These misconceptions have caused more misses and frustration than you can imagine.  The reason this happens is that pool balls and the cue stick are not perfect, but rather have some interesting properties that we can harness if we are clever enough.

You can also check out the first three parts of the series here:

In The Tri-State Tour’s Gotham City Billiards stop in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, September 24, Daniel Dagotdot continued on his incredible hot streak, going undefeated for his second win of the season.  This A/B/C/D 9-ball event featured a field of forty-nine players competing for the $1,500 in added prize money.

Since Daniel’s opening tour stop win at Sandcastle Billiards, he has continued to impress throughout the tri-state area billiard circuit, placing 4th at the Sandcastle Mezz Tour stop, and capturing a victory at the recent Predator Tour stop at Mr. Cue Billiards.

His path to victory at Gotham City brought over Bogie Uzdejczyk 7-5, Harry Lau 7-4, tour newcomer Bill Suden 7-6, Carl Yusuf Khan 7-2, Gary Murgia 7-6, and Alan Chan 8-5 to lock down the hot seat and guarantee his spot in the finals.

Meanwhile, Tony Ignomirello proved to be the player highlighting the one-loss side… after having lost his opening match of the event, Tony fought back through nine straight matches to go up against Alan Chan in the semifinal, after defeating Alex Gilvarg 9-6 in the quarterfinal.

CSI - BCAPL

CSI - BCAPL

It has recently been announced that one of the biggest pool events in the country has just gotten an upgrade for the 2013 edition of the tournament. The BCAPL National Championships, which will be held at the Riviera in 2012 for the last time, is going to be moving to the Rio for 2013.  Read on for more information in the press release from CSI – CueSports International…

FAREWELL RIVIERA – HELLO RIO 2013!!
BCAPL Moves National Championships to the Rio Las Vegas

Mark Griffin and CueSports International (CSI) announce two major changes for the BCAPL National Championships. In 2013, the “Greatest Pool Tournament in the World” will move from May to July … and will walk the welcome mat at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

The BCAPL National Championships have outgrown the space at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. The 2012 (36th) BCAPL National Championships, scheduled May 9-20, 2012, will be the last year the event will be held at the Riviera. CSI thanks the Riviera for hosting the championships for the past 18 years.

The relocation to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino is scheduled for July 17-27, 2013.  The move will allow the BCAPL to expand both the amateur nationals and the CSI professional tournaments.  The date and venue changes will provide more accommodations and more pool tables, so that more players, families, and friends can enjoy an even richer experience at the new venue.

The Pool World Welcomes a New Champion in Zhu Qing Bi at the Women’s World 9-Ball Championships

September 26, 2011

The 2011 World 9-Ball Champion Zhu Qing Bi

The 2011 World 9-Ball Champion Zhu Qing Bi

The best of the best female players in the world took Shenyang, China by storm for the 2011 Women’s World 9-Ball Championships on September 19-25.  While China is becoming known as the world’s current hub for young emerging phenom players, including former champions Fu Xiao Fang, Liu Sha-Sha, Siming Chen, and WPBA star Xiaoting Pan, it comes as no surprise that a new Chinese champion has come to the fore at the 2011 summit… in the form of 23-year-old Zhu Qing Bi.  Read on for the details in WPA press release by Ted Lerner, and check out www.WPApool.com for more in-depth coverage…

Zhu Qing Bi stands no more than 4’11″. But Sunday night in Shenyang, this tiny woman became a giant of women’s pool and a sporting hero in the most populace nation on earth. This after the relatively unknown from Beijing defeated world number 2 and heavy favorite Siming Chen 9-7 to capture the 2011 Women’s World 9-ball Championship.

Bi’s title win capped an incredible day for the 23-year-old.  Up until Sunday, she was mostly unknown beyond her professional peers in China, where the women’s game is wildly popular and its top players are legitimate stars.   She is ranked number 7 in China and 81st worldwide and had never won any pool tournaments of note.

That all changed on the last day of the Women’s World 9-Ball Championship in this northeastern city of 7 million people. After she quietly worked her way through the field at the Liaoning Hunnan Sports Training Arena beginning Thursday, Bi shocked defending champion and world number one Xiao fang Fu in Sunday’s semi-final, 9-6.  Playing the role of underdog perfectly, Bi played seemingly without a care in the world, while the pressure of stardom and expectation appeared at times to get to Fu.

Bi’s finals match against Chen later in the evening, played in front of over 1200 people, didn’t go quite as smoothly as the semi-final against Fu, and she could have very nearly lost. But Bi freewheeled long enough to build up a decent cushion and held on down the nervy stretch to cross the finish line first.

Daniel Dagotdot Takes The Predator Tour’s Amateur Division While Oscar Bonilla Closes a Win in the Open/Pro 10-Ball

On the weekend of September 17-18, The Predator Pro/Am Tour held its eleventh tour stop of the season at the Lindenhurst, NY pool room Mr. Cue Billiards on Long Island.

With a field of 56 players for both events, the $1,000 added tournament got underway early Saturday afternoon, and by Sunday evening, only two players remained in the winner’s bracket. Two of the area’s strongest young amateur players faced off in the hot seat match to see who would lock down a spot in the finals.

Long Island player Erin McManus, who had not competed all summer since the WPBA US Open in June, faced off against Jersey City-based Daniel Dagotdot in the hot seat match. Erin and Daniel would have a close battle in this match, which would end in Daniel’s favor at 8-5.

Victor Nau, the Predator Tour’s current #1-ranked player in the ‘A+’ class, fought through the one-loss side to take on Erin McManus in the semifinal, after he defeated Andrew Waggoner in the quarterfinal, 10-5. Erin would continue her strong play in this match to win 9-7 and earn her spot in the finals for a rematch with Daniel.

CueTips Billiards Instruction: Aiming Systems – Part 3

September 22, 2011

CueTips: Aiming Systems, Part 3

CueTips: Aiming Systems, Part 3

By NYC Grind Contributor, Mark Finkelstein

This week I want to look at another way to think about aiming systems.  This method is not really an aiming system that you just follow some steps to pocket the ball, but rather a way to take what you know and can see and apply it to a shot that you just can’t quite see.  Sometimes under pressure there are some shots that just don’t look right.

Imagine you are hill-hill in a big match, and you have an open shot at the game ball.  Take a look at the diagram.

All-Time Field In Place as The WPA Women’s World 9-Ball Championship Kicks Off Thursday in Northeastern China

September 21, 2011

Some of the stars of the 2011 Women's World 9-Ball Championships

Some of the stars of the 2011 Women's World 9-Ball Championships

(Shenyang, China)–The center of the pool universe has landed  in northeastern China this week, as the Chevrolet Cup 2011 Women’s World 9-ball Championship gets set to kick off in the ancient cultural city of Shenyang on Thursday.

This year’s field of the finest women pool professionals on the planet promises some extra special excitement as 25 different countries are being represented in the 64 player field, including all World Pool Association top ten ranked women.

The event begins Thursday, September 22 at 10am local time(GMT +8) and will take place at the Liaoning Hunnan Sports Training Base, a beautiful and modern multipurpose sports facility situated just on the outskirts of this city of seven million people. The players will be divided into eight groups of eight players each. Each group will play a double elimination format, race to 7 alternate break, with two players on the winners side and two on the losers side advancing to the round of 32. From there on the tournament will be a single elimination race to 9. $150,000 is up for grabs with $30,000 going to the winner on Sunday.

Defending champion and world number one Fu Xiaofang of China took center stage tonight at the lavish opening banquet inside the grand ballroom of the Sunrise International Hotel, but the diminutive 23 year old superstar is sure to have her plate full holding onto the title she won here last year with a nail biting 9-7 finals win over Hall of Famer Allison Fisher.

Fu’s sensational win in 2010 marked the second year running that a Chinese woman player has won the world 9-ball championship. In 2009, then 16 year old Lui Sha Sha shocked everyone by capturing the world championship in Shenyang despite being completely unknown outside of her own association.

Orcullo Delivers For The Philippines! Champion of the Predator Championship

September 19, 2011

A jubilant Orcullo celebrates his triumph and ends a long dry spell for the Philippines

A jubilant Orcullo celebrates his triumph and ends a long dry spell for the Philippines

The Predator Group and Dragon Promotions once again put on a world-class event in their five-day Predator International 10-Ball Championships, which was held for the second consecutive year in the Philippines, home to many of the sport’s top champions.

With a field of numerous renowned Filipino players such as Efren Reyes, Ronnie Alcano, Roberto Gomez, Ramil Gallego, and Lee Van Corteza competing for the title on their home turf, it would be a likely bet that one of them would rise to the occasion to take home the trophy.

In this case, that would be a very good bet, as Philippines’ own Dennis Orcullo would clinch his second title in this event, after defeating Mika Immonen in the finals.  Orcullo also took home gold in this event in Las Vegas in 2009.

Read on for all the details of the final matches in the press release from Dragon Promotions, with photos by Chito Ines

Manila, Philippines – Dennis Orcullo ended the Philippines’ long drought of fruitless wins when he defeated double world champion Mika Immonen in the finals of the Predator International Championship. Orcullo started the event off on bad footing when he dropped an embarrassing 9-3 loss to Japan’s Yukio Akagariyama, but won 8 consecutive matches in a row to claim the 11 years ongoing Predator crown.
