At the Tri-State Tour’s first visit of the season to Cue Bar on Saturday, September 15, a twenty-nine player field turned out to the Bayside, NY pool room…where Carl Yusuf Khan would work his way through to an undefeated victory.
Khan’s route through the winner’s bracket featured wins over Geoff Bauer 7-6, Eddie Manlulu 7-5, Arturo Reyes 7-4, and Juan Guzman 7-6 in the winner’s side final four.
Meeting Carl Yusuf Khan in the hot seat match would be one of the New York area’s top emerging junior talents, 13-year-old Thomas Rice. Rice went undefeated through the winner’s bracket to meet with Khan in the hot seat match, after defeating Tom Riley in the final four, 7-5. However, longtime top NYC-area tour player Khan proved to be the dominant force in this match, winning 9-5.
Thomas Rice was recently seen in the NYC pool spotlight when he won the Junior National qualifier event held at Gotham City Billiards back in June. With an ability to go toe-to-toe with top adult amateurs in the area, it’s likely that we will see many more great performances from young Thomas in the future.
After his loss to Rice in the winner’s side final four, Tom Riley went on to defeat Robert Veit 6-4 in the one-loss side final four, while Juan Guzman defeated Koka Davladze 7-6 in the other final four match-up. Riley and Guzman went on to face one another in the quarterfinal, where Riley won with a 7-4 final score.
For the second time in the event, Tom Riley then matched up with Thomas Rice in the semifinal match. In the battle to move on to the final, Rice won by a score of 7-2, making for his first appearance in the finals of a Tri-State event. Four weeks earlier, Thomas Rice also had a good run at Gotham City Billiards, where he finished tied for 7th.
In the final match in a race to nine, Thomas Rice took on undefeated Carl Yusuf Khan. As Rice is rated ‘D+’ and Khan rated ‘B+’, Rice was spotted games on the wire in this race. The two players had the score tied at 5-5 in this match, and went on to battle back and forth until they reached hill-hill at 8-8…when Carl Yusuf Khan closed out the final game to capture the win.
Congratulations to both finalists on a great finish, as well as 3rd and 4th place finishers Tom Riley & Juan Guzman!
