Derby City Classic Straight Pool Challenge and Bigfoot 10-Ball Challenge Update

Posted on by Alison Fischer

The marathon nine-day tournament that is the Derby City Classic has brought in international talent to compete in nearly every discipline of American pocket billiards, and for the dedicated fans of the game, it couldn’t be more exciting.

In the Straight Pool Challenge event, competitors had the opportunity to get in the action for a $100 entry fee, which gave them 16 chances over the course of the week to earn a top run score and qualify for the final single-elimination bracket of eight players. The additional challenge to this event is that it is being played on the Diamond 10×5 foot table, which may not be the typical table played on by most players. For each day of preliminary rounds of competition, the top three ranked players earned prize money, and a chance at a spot in the final bracket.

The story of the week for this event was the relative unknown player to American fans who came in to storm the challenge and take the top high run spot, Stuart Pettman. A former pro snooker player from England, Pettman wowed 14.1 fans by achieving the two high runs of the preliminary rounds of 100 and 117. Pettman will be one of the players to watch in the final bracket of action, and has already defeated Jayson Shaw in the first round of the tournament.

Below is the final bracket of matches for the Derby City 14.1 Challenge:

Stuart Pettman def. Jayson Shaw
Dennis Orcollo vs Ralph Eckert
Alex Pagulayan vs Max Eberle
Niels Feijen def. Darren Appleton

Matches in this event will be live streamed by both and

"Robocop" Dennis Orcollo is in the running for both the 14.1 Challenge and the 10-Ball Challenge.

The Derby City Classic’s Diamond Bigfoot 10-Ball Challenge is also being played on the Diamond 10×5 foot tables, and is currently in the quarterfinal rounds of action. The event initially featured a limited field of 32 players and a $1,000 entry fee, and will award the winner a $20,000 payday. The format for the event is single-elimination, race to eleven games, and has brought in an international cast of champions.

Due to the need to schedule around the other events running concurrently and the limited number of tables, all of the matches in each round of the tournament are not run simultaneously.

In the earlier session of semifinals at 3pm, Niels Feijen eliminated Shane Van Boening from the event with a score of 11-8, while Ronnie Alcano defeated Stuart Pettman.

The other two quarterfinal matches are currently being played out in the 6:30pm EST session, and are both featured on free live streams.
