On the Saturday, March 2 stop on the Tri-State Tour, Emit Yolcu would be the player to highlight the thirty-six player field that turned out to compete for the $700 top prize at Gotham City Billiards in Brooklyn, NY. This event was open only to C/D level amateur players, and featured $1,250 in added prize money.
Yolcu’s route to the top in this event was marked by wins against Charles Slatter 6-1, the previous week’s winner Kyle Bubet 6-3, Linda Cheung 7-6, and Nicholas Chan 6-4 to go to the hot seat match. After defeating Jay Chiu 7-4 in the final four of the winner’s bracket, Keith Diaz would be the player to match up against Emit Yolcu for the hot seat, where Yolcu would win it 6-4 to lock down a spot in the final.
While the action in the winner’s bracket went on, Jamie Polito took the reigns on the one-loss side with an impressive run of nine wins following his loss in the first round of the event to Tony Ignomirello 6-2. Polito would make it all the way to the semifinal match, with his run including wins over Linda Cheung 8-6, Kim Meyer-Gabia 6-0, Jay Chiu 7-6, and Nick Chan 6-3 in the quarterfinal.
The player who lost the hot seat match, Keith Diaz, then took on Jamie Polito for the semifinal. Diaz played strong in this semifinal match, while Polito had run out of steam after his long day of fighting through the one-loss side, and Diaz won it at 6-1.
Keith Diaz then moved on to the finals for a rematch against Emit Yolcu. In this final match, Diaz took an initial lead, until Yolcu caught up with him and tied it 6-6. Yolcu and Diaz would then trade racks until Yolcu finished off the match at hill-hill, winning 8-7.
Congratulations to winner Emit Yolcu and runner-up Keith Diaz, along with all of the event’s other top finishers.
