Lee Vann Corteza Wins Twice Against Orcollo to Take the Southern Classic 9-Ball

Lee Vann Corteza, who recently claimed the China Open in May, made another addition to his 2013 trophy collection at Harrah’s in Tunica, MS. In the finale of the Southern Classic’s 9-Ball division, held on Saturday, June 29, Lee Vann Corteza triumphed over 2013 Derby City 10-Ball Challenge Champion Dennis Orcollo in an all-Filipino battle for the title.

To begin the final day leading up to the championship match, only nine players remained. In that seventh round of the tournament, Dennis Orcollo was one of two players with no losses, the other being his opponent Warren Kiamco…who then received his first loss from Orcollo.

Meanwhile, Orcollo’s eventual opponent in the final, Lee Vann Corteza, defeated Scotland’s Jayson Shaw to eliminate him from the event. Corteza continued into round eight by defeating Warren Kiamco, who trailed closely through a match that ended in Corteza’s favor at 9-7.

Dennis Orcollo would have his work cut out for him in round eight, as he battled to double-hill with Niels Feijen. As Feijen was poised to run out the final rack, a scratch on a bank shot handed the rack over to Orcollo, who would remain undefeated going into round nine. Also in round eight, British young gun Phil Burford impressed with a five-pack comeback against Carlo Biado after trailing 5-1…leading to an eventual 9-8 victory to eliminate Biado.

Round nine would be the semifinal round, where only three players remained: Burford, Orcollo, and Corteza. Orcollo would have the luck of the draw in this round and received the bye, while Burford and Corteza would have a showdown to see who would continue on to the final. This match would be ruled by Corteza…who when leading 2-0 would break and run six straight racks to get on the hill 8-0. One game away from putting away the match, Corteza gave Burford an opening to run out and put one game on the wire. Buford was left with no good shot after his next break, allowing Corteza to finish the match at 9-1.

Moving on to the final, Lee Vann Corteza would be faced with the task of defeating Dennis Orcollo twice to win the championship. Orcollo looked to have the upper hand in the first final set, nearly leading the entire match to get within two games of the win at 7-5. However, the momentum shifted at this point in the match, and Corteza went on to win the next four straight at 9-7. In the second set of the final, Lee Vann Corteza would work his way to another 9-7 win to capture the Southern Classic 9-Ball title.
